FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a chiropractic sports physician?
A chiropractic sports physician is trained as a specialist in all types of orthopedic pain and injury. Special emphasis is placed on alignment, rehabilitation, and prevention of future injury. Whether the patient is a professional athlete or just wants to be able to walk again, my commitment is to help the patient acheive their goal.
What types of treatments do you offer?
We offer traditional chiropractic treatment, Schlingentisch therapy, physical therapy including interferential and ultrasound, neuromuscular massage, acupuncture, Class 4 therapeutic laser, and exercise instruction with core strengthening, Pilates, and yoga exercises.
I am a teaching tennis pro and I tore my rotator cuff. I also have an old knee injury that comes and goes. Could this have anything to do with my back? Will your treatments heal my shoulder and knee?
In many cases alignment plays a big part in injury occurrance, as well as recovery from those injuries. Any disruption along the kinetic chain (foot, ankle, knee, hip, spine, shoulder girdle, neck and head) can cause muscle and joint imbalances allowing injury to occur. Correcting those imbalances by proper evaluation and treatment can create a permanent change.
My medical doctor tells me I have arthritis and spinal stenosis. I have been told I have to live with it. He says Dr. Shackley has some treatments that may help. What can you do for me?
At the orthopedic institute in Germany, where I received my postgraduate training, I learned many progressive techniques to help conditions such as yours. A multidisciplinary approach works best; including physical therapy, exercises, Class 4 therapeutic laser, and Schlingentisch treatment. Dietary changes, to control inflammation can also be helpful.
I have tried everything for my herniated disc. The only thing left is surgery. Can Dr. Shackley help me?
I trained in non-surgical treatment for disc injuries, including disc herniation, with orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists in a two-year specialty program. Depending on the size and location of the herniation, non-surgical results are possible. With conservative treatment, my patients find that most symptoms can be managed without surgery.
How long does treatment take and do you accept my insurance?
I follow the medical model of patient care in that there is a beginning, middle and end to a treatment plan. Initial goals are to relieve pain, stabilize the affected area, then educate the patient on self care. Depending on the severity and type of condition, length of treatment can vary. Most conditions show improvement within two weeks. Our office accepts most insurance and I am a provider for many plans, including Medicare. As many insurance plans vary in their coverage, we are happy to assist in determining benefits prior to providing care.
